Bettman can sing and play fiddle; Halpin better on mandolin than vocals

Singer-Songwriter- Fiddler has hooked up with singer-songwriter-mandolinist for her second outing on this self-released CD. She wrote eight of the songs and co-wrote two. (Halpin wrote the other two, including the fine instrumental “Buttonwillow”). Some of songs – “The Darker Side of Happy” about two concurrent suicides – have insightful lyrics while others – “After The Storm”, for example – are songs with sing-along choruses that could have been written anytime in the last 40 years.

I really do love Bettman’s soaring vocals, and she reminds me a lot of Holly Near (a favorite), especially on the upbeat “It All Comes Back To You”. She also plays a mean fiddle, but the arrangements are such that it’s the vocals that stand out front – except on the lone instrumental track. Halpin sings harmony on many of the tracks but when he sings lead – such as on “The Sound of Time” – I find his voice thin and these tracks just don’t work for me. “Moonlit Night” has Halpin on lead and this song could easily have been recorded in the 1950s by Marty Robbins. It is reminiscent of his hit “El Paso” with its Mariachi sound.

The standout tracks, which are “folk radio” ready are the aforementioned “It All Comes Back to Love” and “Buttonwillow”, each of which I’d give five stars. It’s the inconsistency of a few of the other tracks that pulled my rating of this CD down.

Flawless and fearless singing, playing and harmonizing from Stephanie and Luke. My husband and I have been following them ever since they became a duo. And they only get better. Try to catch them in a live show! You will be hooked.
